Former NFL general manager believes the New York Giants NFL Draft quarterback question is clear
Danielle Parhizkaran-USA TODAY Sports

There's been significant talk all spring long about whether the New York Giants should select a quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft or not, and for good reason. Daniel Jones is coming off a season where he threw a total of two touchdowns to six interceptions and then got injured, missing the rest of the season. He took 30 sacks on just 209 dropbacks, showing complete ineptitude when it came to avoiding pressure.

And it's not just Daniel Jones' horrific play that has many believing that general manager Joe Schoen will be selecting a quarterback this spring. The Giants have logged 15 or more private and formal meetings with quarterback prospects throughout the 2024 NFL Draft process. They may not be selecting a quarterback, but Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll sure have been doing their homework on all of them.

However, one general manager thinks the answer to the New York Giants NFL Draft quarterback question is quite clear. In an interview with Ari Meirov this week, former Vikings general manager Rick Spielman made it clear that he doesn't think the Giants could realistically explain to ownership that they'll use a top-six pick on a quarterback after giving out $81 million dollars fully-guaranteed to Daniel Jones just a year ago.

Rick Spielman expanded on his thoughts, explaining that the Giants need to go in a different direction at pick six:

"At number six, you're going to get a significant player...Assuming Daniel Jones is healthy they have to go with him. If he struggles, maybe Drew Lock comes in...but they won't address the quarterback need in the first round this year...You still have to give Daniel Jones a chance, and maybe he can emulate what he did the first year he was under Daboll and the success that he had to get that kind of contract. So to me, it makes no sense that people are talking about them looking at number six and a quarterback right now because there's a significant player that's going to be there that will help them win this year."

Spielman isn't wrong. Whether it's Marvin Harrison Jr., Malik Nabers, Brock Bowers, or Rome Odunze, there's going to be a special player available to the Giants at pick six. And it's true, the Giants are in desperate need of special players on offense. Perhaps if they give Daniel Jones a real receiving threat he might actually begin to thrive like he did two years ago, or play even better.

It sure seems like Joe Schoen, their staff, and now friends like Rick Spielman are doing their best to silence the Giants quarterback talk over the last couple weeks which makes it quite difficult to tell if it's all a smokescreen or not. Either way, we're going to find out what the New York Giants really do in just a few short days.
