PlayStation One games that should be adapted into movies

The highest-grossing PlayStation — aka PS1 — game is “Gran Turismo.” It took a while, but they eventually adapted “Gran Turismo” into a film. Other franchises that had games come out on the PlayStation, such as “Tomb Raider” and “Final Fantasy,” have gotten movie adaptations as well. That doesn’t mean we should stop, though. Here are some other video games — and game series — that had entries come out for the original Sony PlayStation console we’d like to see turned into films. These need not be PS1 exclusives, for the record. They just had to come out on this console.

“Crash Bandicoot”

“Crash Bandicoot”
Sony

In a way, “Crash Bandicoot” was to the PlayStation what Sonic the Hedgehog was to the Sega Genesis. Obviously, Sonic has shown up in two successful films, so why not the genetically-mutated bandicoot from the Wumpa Islands? There have been so many “Crash Bandicoot” games, it would make sense.

“Metal Gear Solid”

“Metal Gear Solid”
Konami

“Metal Gear Solid” was the first game of this iconic series that gained international attention, and it’s the one that made it feel like a series that could be turned into a film. They may want to just adapt this game into a movie. The one issue? Solid Snake was somewhat inspired by Snake Plissken of “Escape from New York” fame.

“Spyro the Dragon”

“Spyro the Dragon”
Sony

Spyro was designed to try and get younger kids hooked into the PlayStation, an audience they needed to pull away from Nintendo. The purple dragon and his dragonfly friend Sparx did just that, so why not try to capture those kids of the ‘90s, and their children, with a family-friendly movie now?

“Dragon Quest VII”

“Dragon Quest VII”
Enix

Back-to-back dragons! Although, there is less of the whole “dragon” thing to “Dragon Quest.” If we wanted to be pedantic, this film would have to be an adaptation of “Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of Forgotten Past,” the only game from the long-running series released for the PS1. Plus, there is technically an adaptation of the fifth game that came out in Japan, so that is our workaround as well. Don’t worry, this is the only technicality-laden entry on this list.

“Rayman”

“Rayman”
UbiSoft

“Rayman” is kind of Mario-esque, though without all the accoutrement that make Mario a standout. Eventually, the worlds of Rayman and Mario would collide in a 2022 Nintendo Switch game. Clearly, the thing to do now is release a “Rayman” movie, and given how huge the recent “Super Mario Bros.” movie was, do a “Godzilla v. Kong”-style crossover film after that.

“Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee”

“Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee”
GT Interactive

A series that went with subtitles right from the beginning — that certainly makes “Oddworld” feel at home in the world of modern movies. The first game “Abe’s Oddysee” also has a plot that feels cinematic, though it’s also super dark in a way that might lead to anger from unsuspecting parents who brought their children to see the movie with the animated characters in the fictional world. This is, after all, a game that has Wikipedia category tags of “Video games about slavery” and “Genocide in fiction.”

“Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater”

“Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater”
Activision

Sure, Tony Hawk is a real person, and so are the other skateboarders in the iconic series of games under the “Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater” umbrella. That doesn’t mean we can’t have a “Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater” movie! The “Gran Turismo” film is about a guy who is so good at the video game he gets to try his hand at being a real racecar driver. Maybe the “Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater” movie could have a similar plot. All we know is it means we can have “Superman” by Goldfinger on the soundtrack.

“Croc: Legend of the Gobbos”

“Croc: Legend of the Gobbos”
Fox Interactive

Originally pitched as a Yoshi game, when that failed over at Nintendo, the project moved over to Sony and the cutesy dinosaur was turned into a cutesy crocodile. There are different worlds to be explored, and the villain is a magician named Baron Dante. You could also pull from the sequel potentially to bolster the plot.

“Dino Crisis”

“Dino Crisis”
Capcom

“Dino Crisis” just sounds like the name of a movie, though admittedly not a big-budget one. This is actually a horror survival game, although apparently it was marketed as a “panic horror” game instead, which sounds wild. There is a slight hiccup here. It’s about a team sent to a research facility on a secluded island only to find the island is swarming with dinosaurs. That kind of sounds like the plot to Seymour Skinner’s book “Billy and the Cloneasaurus."

“Twisted Metal”

“Twisted Metal”
Sony

Yes, there is a “Twisted Metal” TV show now, but television and film are different mediums. It feels like “Twisted Metal” could have the vibe of the “Purge” sequels, or maybe like a modern version of “Death Race.” You know, borderline-nihlistic carnage replete with car crashes and bursts of violence. That feels more suited to an 85-minute horror flick than a TV show.

“PaRappa the Rapper”

“PaRappa the Rapper”
Sony

If somebody decided to adapt this cult classic game into a movie, there would be a baked-in audience. Of course, you’d have to get pretty creative with the storyline, as the plot to “PaRappa the Rapper” is paper thin. It’s a rhythm game about a rapping dog who has a crush on a flower named Sunny Funny. Can you make a movie about a rapping dog that isn’t terrible? Let’s find out together!

“Syphon Filter”

“Syphon Filter”
989 Studios

We’ll admit we didn’t realize the “Syphon Filter” franchise was as successful as it is. They made six games over seven years, and they mostly got good critical reviews and sold well, particularly early on. Yeah, it’s basically just a spy story, but they aren’t going to stop making spy action films, so you might as well use the IP of “Syphon Filter” to bring in an audience.

“Jet Moto”

“Jet Moto”
Sony

Hoverbikes! Do we need to say more? The “Jet Moto” racing games are set in a futuristic world where jet motos exist, and they are basically motorcycles-meet-hovercrafts, which means you can race over land or water. There’s enough there for a film, especially with modern technical capabilities on the big screen.

“I.Q.: Intelligent Qube”

“I.Q.: Intelligent Qube”
Sony

Look, the gameplay of “I.Q.: Intelligent Qube” does not necessarily lend itself to a film. That’s also true for the board game “Battleship,” and that still happened. It’s just some guy running around on platforms made of cubes being rolled over by other cubes he has to clear. However, if they adapt this game, we get a movie called “I.Q.: Intelligent Qube,” and that’s all we really want.

“Monster Rancher”

“Monster Rancher”
Tecmo

“Monster Rancher” is kind of like “Pokemon,” which is a good start. However, in these games you spend more time tending to, and breeding, your monsters on a farm. Also, the creatures are more monstrous and less cutesy than “Pokemon.” The idea of people raising monsters on ranches certainly seems like fodder for a film, and it was already turned into an anime show back in 1999.

“Devil Dice”

“Devil Dice”
THQ

You know how sometimes a company will buy up a property just because they want to use the title. That’s our idea with “Devil Dice.” The game is about little devil dudes running around on a grid of giant dice. We imagine “Devil Dice” as a film more in the vein of, say, “Ouija.” Maybe we throw in enough homage to the PlayStation game to mollify the fans, but we mostly just feel like “Devil Dice” has to be some sort of horror movie about possessed dice or something, and we’ll do what we have to in order to make that happen.
